Ms. Shirley Eye, Education Foundation Board Member
Being on the Foundation Board is an extension of my career as a public school educator. Serving and nurturing students (and faculty) has been a love of mine for fifty plus years. Through my involvement with the Foundation, I can continue my work.
Supporting the Foundation has deep roots for me. At the age of 31, I was the mother of two children and working as a secretary in the Appomattox County School Board office. I seized the availability of a state scholarship and began my undergraduate work in education, going on to attain a master’s degree in administration. The Foundation creates similar financial support for Germanna students, which is why I’m inspired to support it.
For me, the Gladys P. Todd Academy has the greatest impact. I grew up as a sharecropper’s daughter and fully understand poverty, as my father didn’t have the means to support my college dreams. The students who are the first in their family to seek advanced education now have the support, both academically and personally, to follow their educational dream. To promote this specific program, along with the other transformational programs at Germanna, is an honor for me.
